I have a newfound appreciation for what they do. One of the best parts of the tour was just walking around their “libraries” of items. I saw just about everything that day even gingerbread marshmallows. I also enjoyed seeing the automatic packer that creates a box around the product and then with bar codes figures out which city it is going to and sends it to the right truck all automatically. It was all really, really impressive. I want to meet the people that designed the ‘production’ process and the people who made the optimization program that says where all the product needs to be across the US and how much to store where.

Fun Facts:

The facility general manager was an LGO grad.

Work Hard. Have Fun. Make History. This was above the front doors as we walked in the facility and I like it.

The Phoenix facility ships hundreds of thousands of items per day.

Amazon started by fulfilling orders in Jeff Bezos’ home.

They increase their employee base with 3X the workers over the holidays

The last item bought and delivered before Christmas was ordered at 2:35pm and was delivered at 6:15pm. It was a rechargeable battery pack.

If you stacked up the all of the copies sold during the 2011 holiday season of the Steve Jobs book it would be taller than Mt. Everest.

None of Amazon’s sites are unionized.

Amazon runs the largest website in the world.

It only takes moments between when you place an order on amazon.com and when it arrives in a picker’s handset to go find.

It takes 1-2 hours between the picker getting it to it being sorted, packed, and on to a UPS truck.

Plant Trek: Boeing

For the Boeing tour started with the 737 Delivery Center and Paint Hangers. We went to the Future of Flight Aviation Center after the facility tours. We had an executive lunch and I enjoyed getting to talk with head of Boeing defense engineering. Lunch was followed by the Everett factory tour where we saw the 787 and 777 lines being made. The final stop was the 787 Dreamliner Gallery Tour, which was my favorite part. This is where Boeing brings customers to help them pick out their plane seats, lavatories, crew quarters, and fabric/color schemes. We were like a bunch of kids in a playground!

Fun Facts:

Disneyland’s footprint can fit into Boeing’s Everett facility

A fellow LGO, Ben Mussi, has 6 patents on the 787- Boeing’s newest airplane

Another fellow LGO, Erick Corona, has flown on 34 test flights of the 787

48% of Boeing’s workforce is eligible for retirement in the next 4 years

The hanger that cures the paint job is kept at 120 degrees

It takes 40-60 gallons to paint an airplane; this adds 200-450 lbs of weight

A Boeing airplane retails for $70M

The last plane Boeing introduced before the 787 was the 777 which was first sold in 1992- 20 years ago

The Everett facility is the largest building in the world by volume (472,370,319 cu ft) and covers 98.3 acres

There were birds flying around the facility

InterviewFest Preparations

This time last year I was overjoyed to have gotten an invitation to InterviewFest and I know those that have been selected to interview this year are probably feeling excited and nervous about next Friday and Monday. I typically go overboard on these types of things so if you don't do all the stuff I did you'll probably be fine, but if you are looking for more ways to prepare, this might give you some ideas. I prepared for my interview by reading official (Sloan and LGO admissions) and unofficial (blogs, clearadmit, and other websites) interview advice and compiled the following checklist:

To prep for the LGO interview I…

…reviewed a ton of past Sloan interview questions from ClearAdmit’s website and grouped the questions into themes. From there I came up with multiple stories that would fit those types of questions and mapped out the STAR (situation, task, action, result) for the story. I even practiced saying the stories aloud making sure I could get to my points quickly and concisely. Be prepared to have the interviewer probe into your story for lots of details about how you, your boss, peers, etc felt, what you/they did, etc.

…prepped for LGO specific questions like- why LGO, why are you interested in XYZ engineering discipline, how will you contribute to LGO, etc.

…did a bunch of research on all the partner companies. I thought about which ones I was the most interested in and why.

…looked up common MBA interview mistakes.

…created a list of four or so ‘brand themes’ I wanted to cover and had specific short stories to reinforce them. I thought about possible weaknesses in my application as areas to focus on in the interview (if possible).

…reviewed my application and was familiar with my essays.

…had a friend give me a mock interview from the sample questions I had compiled (above).

…and finally, relaxed, got lots of sleep the night before, and knew that if LGO was meant to be it would happen!

Good luck to all the folks interviewing over the next couple of weeks! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on campus! Many of the LGOs had never been in a car manufacturing plant- it was quite an eye opening experience!

At GM our day was spent touring their newest North American facility, the GM Lansing Delta Township that makes GM crossovers, having a hands-on experience with their Simulated Work Environment (SWE), and the Detroit car show. All of which were fantastic! We interacted with very enthusiastic workers that were clearly passionate about and proud of their work. My group’s tour guide had worked for GM for over 30 years and was at Lansing when they produced the first and one-millionth crossover. Even the operators on the floor seemed to be smiling and had a good attitude.

GM hosted us at the Detroit North American Auto Show that evening. I enjoyed seeing the concept cars and high-end cars that I will most likely never own (never hurts to dream, right?).

Fun GM Facts:

First of all, robots are ah-mazing! They have the strength to crush the piece of metal they are working with, but at the same time the sensitivity to not even make a dent in the car body’s metal. The preciseness is really unbelievable.

In the body shop the sparks flew everywhere – even up to the ceiling.

Once the metal body of the car is complete it is moved between buildings via the ‘gerbil tube’ that allows the skeleton to stay indoors the entire time.

‘Skillets’ move the car along the assembly line to allow the operator to move with the car when working. The skillets also elevated the car 0-5 feet in the air depending on the task being performed to minimize the strain on the operator.

One of my favorite things about the plant was how they have completely different make/models/colors/specs coming down the line. It would be a blue Chevy with a sunroof, followed by a red GMC, followed by a green Buick, etc. All of the parts were sequenced by the supplier and given in the order that the operator would need to assemble them in.

Along the same lines, the doors are on during painting to ensure the exact color is used for the whole car but then the doors are taken off to remove the extra 3-4 steps each operator would have to take to move around the doors on each of the 100 operations that need to be done to the interior. At the end of the assembly the same doors find their way back to the crossover on the other side of the plant to be finally assembled- so neat!

I liked the automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that move based on magnets in the floor and bring the right type of engine below the vehicle, in just the right spot, to bring the two together. These AGVs also knew when they were low on battery and would go back to the charging station on their own.

The crossovers are tested in a torrential downpour to ensure there are no leaks as well as driven over different type terrains to check for squeaking or rattling.

The following day we visited the Ford Dearborn Truck plant that makes F-150s. It is located in the Ford Rouge Center. The plant was not quite as impressive as GM’s but I’ve heard that most of GM’s older plants are similar to what we saw today at Ford’s facility.

Fun Ford Facts:

The Rouge Center is 1 mile X 1.5 miles

It was bought by Henry Ford in 1915

This center has made WWI anti-submarines, tractors, WWII jeeps, tanks and airplane engines, and the Mustang from 1964-2004 – lots of history!

The roof of the plant is the largest ‘living roof’ with a 10.4 acre garden on top

I feel like we have done so much in a very short amount of time! It is amazing to think that we still have four more plants to tour! The CAT team did a wonderful job hosting us. When we arrived Sunday night, they gave us a reception where we got to meet and greet with CAT executives. The surf & turf + open bar weren’t a bad addition. J

The site visit on Monday included a plant tour, a few presentations, simulations, product demonstration, and a panel discussion. It was a perfect mix of activities! The highlight definitely had to be the product demonstration. The operators did some crazy stuff with GIANT machines. Who knew a bulldozer could be so entertaining! At the end of the demo they let us climb all over the machines. A HUGE thank you to all the LGO volunteers for making the day such a success. Leah and Jane in Admissions do a great job presenting the program in a professional way to potential students. It was fun sorta being the 'face' of the LGO program to the attendees. I really enjoyed leading this effort!

Last year Brad wouldn't take a picture of me with the balloons because he said it was 'unprofessional' or something. This year I made sure I got my picture with them. Yay!

Ice Hockey

I know it's hard to believe, but I play ice hockey now! Playing on the team is definitely in the top 5 best experiences of LGO. Our team is pretty terrible but it still is SO much fun! Michael Joyce does an amazing job coaching!

Me looking completely ridiculous

"Out on the ice" :-)

Birthday

I am now the ripe old age of twenty-seven. Brad threw me a birthday party that I kinda hijacked and turned into an LGO/Baltic (my sloan cohort) party. It couldn't have turned out any better! I ended up cooking the 70+ guests a Tex-mex fajita dinner but the best part was just getting to chill with my new Boston friends!

Pie Night
It is a tradition in the Sommerkorn household to have a whole night dedicated to pie. When they first told me about this I couldn't even think of more than maybe four types of pie. They have really expanded my pie horizons over the last 6 months! This year pie night was on my birthday and it was a great way to celebrate! I acted as Liz's sous chef and got to learn even more about various types of pie. Liz made 14 pies for the occasion (she is SO talented!). It was fun asking guests which pie was there favorite. It was a really tough question because all of them were so stinkin' good! Crowd favorites were the Apple/Cranberry/Ginger pie and classic French Silk but the most talked about pie was the delicious Peanut Butter Bacon pie.

Thanksgiving
With only a couple days off school and work and with flights being pretty pricey, we decided to stay in town for Thanksgiving. The amazing Crail's had us over for dinner to celebrate. Paige and Clayton are incredible hosts and made us feel right at home with their delicious smoked turkey, super sweet tea, and the Dallas Cowboys football game!

Newport Mansions
Over Thanksgiving Break Brad and I rented a car and drove to Rhode Island for the day. We went to see the beautiful Newport Mansions decorated for Christmas. On the way down there I connected that this was the same city in which my dad was born so we got to stop by and see the house he was born in and spent the first 10 years of his life.

My dad's childhood home

I could definitely see myself being a-okay living in this era in one of these 'summer cottages'. The women couldn't have a job, vote, or hold office and they had 40+ person staff that took care of all the cooking and cleaning. Their sole job in life was planning parties. They had $300K (in today's dollars, $7M) budgets to host 400+ person parties that even the president would attend. Since I had only really learned about the program from the information on the website and blogs, I wanted to visit in person to figure out if this was really for me, and if I should apply or not.

Last fall my husband and I flew up to Boston and spent the weekend touring the city and ended the trip with a Monday visit to MIT for Ambassador Day. All the information on the websites and blogs, albeit helpful, didn’t hold a candle to actually being on campus and experiencing the LGO energy first hand. The students I met were so friendly, outgoing, and warm. Everyone had such wonderful things to say about their experiences.

I remember taking a walk along the Charles after the final event that evening and deciding that I would apply to LGO. It was really scary and exciting knowing I would take that next step!

Now, a year later, I am helping actually lead the Ambassador Day event! I know what an impact it had on me and I’m pumped about getting to host 100+ potential applicants on campus this year.

Ambassador Day 2010 - SO happy after a day on campus!

Ambassador Day 2010 - Picture taken during the campus tour

The day’s schedule and my personal commentary on the events is below:

Ambassador Day Schedule: November 7, 2011 9:15 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

9:15-10:30 a.m.: Check in at the LGO office

This is super casual just hanging out and talking with current students. We have a sister program with one of the top universities in China. Each year either we visit China or they visit us. This year they came to the US for 2 weeks and spent a week here with us in Boston. For almost all of them this was their first time in the US and first opportunity to be immersed in English conversation. Some of my favorite memories:

At dinner someone asked, “Why do Americans love Lady Gaga so much?”

They told me in China when someone is surprised they say, “Oh- my- Lady Gaga!”

When they met Brad they kept telling me how “handsome” and “very good looking” he was.

Trying to explain the correct response to “How are you doing?” Do you really say how you are doing or do you just say “Fine”?

Learning how to speak a little Chinese and instead of saying “thank you,” I kept saying “uncle”. Finally I just decided to always say “Thank you uncle!” They would then laugh hysterically at me.

Getting to have a traditional Chinese meal with them and learning all about the dishes. Apparently General Tso’s chicken isn’t actually Chinese!

Michael Joyce and I just ordered water at the Chinese dinner and one of the leaders apparently felt that this must mean they weren’t being good hosts, so they had every type of soda the restaurant had brought over to the table.

At the end of their visit they showed the most amazing slideshow of pictures and memories. They were just SO sweet!

Next year is our year to visit them so in March on our international plant trek we will get to visit them. Brad and I thought that because our apartment would be so small in Boston we wouldn’t be able to host dinner parties for these two years. We were wrong! About 50 people came and we got to try a ton of delicious food. The view wasn’t bad either! Yum!

Sailing

Brad and I learned to sail over the summer at the MIT sailing pavilion. It is just steps away from our apartment and the lessons and use of the boats are completely free! It has been a great way to take advantage of the stunning Boston summer weather and get out on the water. Every morning when I wake up, I feel like I say the same thing – “Today is a great day to be in Boston!”

Brad is hoping to get the next level of certification so we can take out the bigger MIT boats that hold 8-10 people. It is an LGO tradition to always hold a daylong celebration at the MIT sailing pavilion as a class. We couldn’t have asked for better weather that day. The fireworks were literally the best I’ve seen. He started the day by having roses waiting for me outside of my classroom. He had to work with the LGO administration to figure out which classroom we were using that day. Very sneaky!

Our sweet friends, Allison and Joey Dean, gave us a gift certificate to a really nice seafood restaurant in Boston so we went there for dinner. It was delicious and really fun to get dressed up! The only funny thing was wearing a dress and Brad in a tie and jacket on the subway. We felt only slightly overdressed. J

Pie

Liz and Peter Summerkorn are another couple at LGO and live in our building. It has been fun getting to know them over the summer. One of many wonderful aspects of being friends with them is their love for and skill at eating and making PIE. We’ve had some pretty fantastic midnight pie decimation sessions with them...like whole pies being consumed in a single sitting. Be impressed.

Liz has been so kind to *attempt* to teach me how to make amazing pie like her. It feels like just yesterday we were starting classes! I’m afraid this is a taste of how quickly the next two years are going to go! I haven’t done a good job keeping up with my blog posts throughout the summer but I do want make sure I share some of the highlights of this amazingly fun summer. So here we go: the whole summer recapped in a bunch of simultaneous blog posts! Woooohoooo!!!

First Week of LGO - Universe Within

First day of school!

I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous about my first day back to school. It felt like kindergarten all over again- will the kids like me? I wonder if I will have the right backpack. Will they give us a test the first day?

Well, it turned out that the first week was stinking awesome. We got to meet our classmates and found out the summer team assignments. We did lots of team building and personal reflection. It was great!

The hardest part about the first week for me (and actually the whole summer) was learning to step down (which is kinda ironic considering this is Leaders for Global Ops). As you can imagine with 50 Ashleigh’s, everyone is going to want to be in charge. I’ve found, however, that sometimes the best way to lead is by stepping down if that is what allows the team to move forward and be successful. It’s OK to not always be in charge- it’s actually pretty refreshing just to go with the flow.

Team Awesome

LGO assigns 6-7 students to each “summer team”. The majority of our assignments are done in groups. The workload is so large over the summer (6+ classes in 11 weeks) that you have to rely on your team just to get it all done. I loved my summer team! We named our group “Team Awesome” the first week and it actually ended up being really true! Everyone in my group was super smart, hard working, and fun (actually that describes pretty much everyone at LGO!). The last day of class we had to make a poster that pictorially described what we did well this summer and what we could improve on.

One of our team’s biggest accomplishments was not meeting a single weekend or late night. I think we were able to do that because we scheduled meeting time for each of our assignments in advance, everyone came prepared to meetings, and we rotated a facilitator role that helped keep the team focused and moving. I’m really going to miss working with them everyday!

For more photo shoot pics: LGO Pictures

Boston VS. Dallas

Everyone said that it would be quite the culture shock moving from Dallas to Boston. Here are a few of the differences...

Brashleigh in Boston

Brashleigh in Texas (at the Rodeo no less!)

Housing
Many of the differences between Dallas and Boston have been the differences in 'creature comforts'. These ended up being total non-issues. We moved from a house to a ~500 sq ft dorm apartment and love it! My classes and Brad's office are both right across the street. The longest part of our commutes is the elevator ride down 20 floors. Tough life, I know! :-)

<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; Now we ride the "T" (Boston's subway system), use zipcar and get our groceries delivered (since there isn't a grocery store in walking distance). Sometimes we use our homeless cart to walk 3 miles to Target. Okay, we actually only did that once. :-)

<div style="font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; I love being home and getting to cook Brad dinner every night!

Brad has had a transition as well from working for Mustang Technology Group, a defense contractor, to working for Acorn Product Development, a mechanical engineering design consulting firm. I was so sad during our last lunch at Chick-fil-a in Dallas the day before we moved. BUT it turns out they have a Chick-fil-a right next to one of Brad's clients (30 miles outside the city). In Dallas we dressed up every year as cows to get a day of free meals (we would go for breakfast, lunch AND dinner!). Brad was still able to dress-up for Cow Appreciation Day last month and he brought food back to campus for me. My name is Ashleigh Range and I'm a student at MIT in the Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) program. I recently moved from Dallas, Texas where for four years I worked as a management consultant at Alvarez & Marsal (better known for their restructuring work at Lehman Bros). I enjoyed my time working at A&M (especially the people with whom I had the opportunity to work) but did not want to be a career consultant. I applied to LGO hoping to transition out of consulting and into an 'industry' job (as they call it in the consulting world).

I remember first learning about LGO a year and a half ago and *literally* jumping for joy. I was so excited that such a perfect program existed. It combined both my engineering background and desire for an MBA with a focus on manufacturing and operations (where I wanted my career to head). The program's close relationship with partner companies gives students a fabulous network for recruiting when graduating, meaningful internship projects, and a significant fellowship ($$$). I originally thought I would want to look at Harvard/Stanford (sent my GMAT scores there), but after learning more and more about LGO, I realized this was the absolute perfect program for me.

I told you- *literally* jumping for joy over LGO!

When applying last fall, my husband (Brad) and I really didn't think I had a chance based on the acceptance rates and the fact that it was MIT engineering, Sloan (the #3 b-school), and pretty much free. We decided to take the application process one step at time- 1) take the gmat, see if I get over a certain score, 2) visit LGO for Ambassador Day and see if we were still interested, 3) apply and see if I get an interview, 4) interview and see if I get accepted, 5) if I got accepted, pray like CRAZY for guidance.

Miraculously all the hurdles were crossed but that surprisingly was only half the battle. Once I was accepted, deciding to come was a ridiculously hard decision. For the majority of accepted students, coming to LGO is a no-brainer. For the two most indecisive people in the world (brad&me), this was a very tough choice. Our life in Dallas was going SO very well. Brad and I were excelling at our jobs and had built up our reputations/equity at our awesome companies. We had just finished decorating our beautiful home that we had only lived in for two years. My parents were in the process of moving from Florida to Dallas. We had developed close relationships with our sunday school class at church, our co-workers, the GT area alumni, and neighbors. Essentially staying in Dallas would have been wonderful.

My dad and I in front of Brad's and my 1928 tudor home in the M-streets

So 24 hours before the deposit was due we were still completely 50/50 about the decision! We had been praying 24/7 and seeking God's will throughout the whole process and ultimately we felt like He was calling us to go to Boston. I think everyone thought we were nuts. Why would we quit our two amazing jobs, leave our friends, all our personal belongings and move 1800 miles away? It took a ton of faith to put the deposit down and tell our employers, family, and friends that we were leaving. Now, after being in Boston for 8 weeks, I can already say that it was one of the best decisions of our lives. Brad and I could not be happier and God has provided in every way imaginable. Praise the Lord!

"Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them!" - Psalm 107:31

LGO Begins!

I'm going to have to play catch up on this whole blogging thing because it is 6 weeks into the program now and this is my first post.
